Um, yeah, that's not my picture - 1 February 2009

We're on the boat, cruising from Antarctica to South Georgia. Since it's a day at sea the National Geographic photographer on board suggested that we could pick our 20 favorite pictures and put them into a slide show. We all set up our laptops and at 4:30 pm people came around to take a look.

Afterwards, the NG photographer was complimenting all of us, and took the opportunity to call out one photo as an example of something special. He said that he thought it was mine - so of course I was pleased. Then he described the photo, and it wasn't one of mine - it was Jen's. From elation to defeat in 2.5 seconds.

Oh, and if you're curious, here's the photo.

Jen wishes to point out that the above was taken using a stock Canon Digital Rebel SLR with the included 35mm lens from a kayak.

We are unable to open. Get only the red X in a square and tried new window, new tab and show picture. All came out with the same answer; unable to open, blah, blah, blah. Could you repost or post differently so it will show up for us??? Thanks.

Two questions (and probably dumb ones at that): 1. How cold was it outside down there? Are we talking like -50? 2. How cold was the water? Since you were kayaking, does tipping over mean instant hypothermia?

I'll get into more detail on that later - but it was probably warmer in Antarctica (at least the part where we were) than it was in Loveland...

As for the water - the guys diving (that worked on the boat) said it was 38 degrees fahrenheit. Supposedly you've got about 20-30 minutes before serious hypothermia.
